This recipe is a dish that my mother in law made the first time I travelled to visit them. I loved it and started making it for our family, and now it’s a family favorite. I don’t know where it came from, and I have searched the internet over – the fact that my mother in law tends to make up her own name for things doesn’t help, because who knows what the original name for the recipe may have been. Either way, we know it as Man’s BBQ Chicken (even though it’s not barbecued), and it is flippin’ awesome! Since you use drumsticks or thighs, its cost efficient, and feeds a crowd. Plus, it’s healthy, with the only fat being from the dark meat.
To create this delicious dish, you will need:
- chicken pieces (about 12-16)
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 1/2 cups tomato juice (or 1 cup tomato sauce + 1/2 cup water)
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (more if you like it spicy)
- 1/4 tsp dry mustard
- 2 bay leaves
- 4 1/2 tsp worchestire sauce
- 3/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- 3 cloves crushed garlic
- 2 onions, sliced thin
Preheat your oven to 325 degrees.
First, brown your chicken. This will keep all of the moisture and flavour locked inside. Now, I know what you’re going to say, because I said the same thing. But trust me, this chicken is cooked low and slow, and is so full of moisture and flavour, you won’t even realize you’re eating dark meat.
Put all of the other ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil. Then, reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes.
Place your browned chicken pieces in a baking dish.
Pour the sauce on top. Bake for 2- 2.5 hours.
When it’s done, it will be a deep brown, and the meat will be completely falling off the bone. You can serve on the bone, or pull it all off and serve in chunks. Scoop the delicious onion sauce (it has the texture more similar to a chutney) on top of your chicken. I love to serve it with rice (mashed potato is also a good option) with some of the onions on top.
Seriously, you have to try this recipe. And when you do, be sure to stop back and let me know how much you loved it!

These look delicious! My husband is an onion hater so I’ll have to try these when he’s not home for dinner.
I’d be thrilled if you’d link up at this week’s Off the Hook!

I have this recipe also, almost identical! My sister found it back in high school 45-50 years ago. It was always a family favorite. Wondering if you ever converted it to a slow cooker?
Sarah says
I haven’t! It seems like it would be great in the slow cooker though. But it is so cool to know how old it is!
