My husbands cousin made some cute cupcakes for our family Thanksgiving dinner last week, and I knew just the way to dress them up – even though they didn’t need it, she did a great job decorating them. (Aren’t those fondant pumpkins adorable?) I created this cute cupcake topper out of wire and a bit of yarn, and then added a few resin flowers.
These are much easier then they look. Want to make your own? Here’s how:
Yarn Wrapped Wire Cupcake Topper
You will need:
- yarn in whatever color you want
- wire (mine was a 22 gauge, but anything from 22-26 will work fine.)
- hot glue
- embellishments
- a template
I created the template in MS Word. I used the font 5th Grade Cursive and made it as big as I wanted the width to be. Then, I printed it out, and started using it as a guide to shape my wire.
When done, snip your wire off, and go back and hot glue small pieces on to letters such as T. (This is where I stopped taking pictures, because even though it was easy to wrap the yarn, it required both my hands so I wouldn’t tangle it.) I hot glued the beginning of my yarn in place and started wrapping. Each letter requires a bit of a different approach to wrapping and I kind of just winged it as I went. If a letter looped back around (like the n for instance, the wire went down and then back up) I wrapped my wire down with the wire but then wrapped them together on the way back up so that it would keep my yarn going in the right direction and I wouldn’t have to find a way to jump from the bottom of the word to the top to finish off the n. Make sense? It totally will when you start playing with it.
Once I was done, I had a few spots that were harder to wrap then others and a little bit of metal was sticking through, so I simply added some fall colored flowers to the word with hot glue. Then, I added two stir sticks and hot glued them onto thicker parts of the word, so they would stick into the cupcakes.
And there you have it, my yarn wrapped cupcake topper – such a cute way to add a dab of pizazz to your cupcake platters, right? I am in love, and I hope you are too!
