In this post, I’ll share how to layer vinyl and use this technique to create a personalized mermaid monogram decal with my Mermaid Monogram Alphabet SVG Files.
If you’ve ever wondered how to layer vinyl to give your project more depth and dimension, wonder no more. I created these adorable Mermaid Monogram cups with the help of Cricut vinyl. Read on to learn more.
Creating a Mermaid Monogram in Design Space
First, gather your supplies. Here’s what I used (affiliate links provided):
- reusable plastic cup with straw
- Mermaid Monogram SVG file
- Cricut adhesive foil in metallic teal
- Cricut glitter vinyl in hot pink (which I consider more of an orchid color)
- transfer tape/paper (love the new Cricut transfer tape)
- Cricut BrightPad (optional but helpful!)
- weeder and scraper
Start by downloading the SVG files. Upload the corresponding file for your monogram into Design Space. (If you aren’t sure how to upload an SVG into Design Space, see this post.)
In Design Space, you will notice two layers – a “background” layer and a scalloped layer. I decided to make the back with teal foil, and the front with the hot pink glitter. The glitter has a texture, so it’s very difficult (if not impossible) to layer on top of the glitter.
Size both layers to fit your cup, and hit Make It.
Working with Vinyl: How to Layer Vinyl
Once cut, trim the pieces off the larger vinyl sheets, and use a weeder and/or the BrightPad to help you weed the excess material. I wouldn’t recommended cutting these monograms much smaller than 3″, as you may lose the teensy pieces around the edge. Also make sure your blade is clean and sharp, so it doesn’t grab those pieces as it cuts.
After weeding the vinyl, place transfer tape over the hot pink layer. (Helpful hint: Strong Grip transfer tape works best with the glitter vinyl.) Then, place the hot pink layer over the teal layer, and press down in place. Use a scraper to ensure the layers are stuck together. Lastly, position the combined design in place on your cup, and use the scraper to really stick it down.
All that’s left to do is peel off the transfer tape, and your cup is ready to go. This would make a great gift – it could be filled with treats, nail polish or make up goodies, or even gift cards.
I hope that helps you feel confident about layering vinyl! Now go create something beautiful – and don’t forget to tag me on instagram (@simplycraftedlife) so I can see your beautiful projects!
